I already own at least one other book by Moss so I'm sure I'll read her again at some point, but methinks this author is just not my style. The story centres on Kate who seems to be almost completely inept at coping with the day-to-day requirements of life. I loved the more serious aspects of it, the accident, the grief, and the process of healing and acceptance the characters had to go through. She does this despite the threat of government fines and citizens being encouraged to inform upon any neighbours who break the rules.
There are moments too of coming together, acts of kindness, shared concerns. As the two grow closer, can Addy face her grief and guilt head-on and put her past behind her, or will she let it consume her, and lose the guy who truly takes her breath away? Once I adjusted to the stream-of-consciousness narrative, I was completely reeled into this relatively short but immersive novel. Can't find what you're looking for? I liked the characters and I enjoyed seeing how Addy and Vincent's relationship unfolded. Mollie's and Jackson's story was left open ended though, so I'm hoping they still get their own story. That kind of love is beautiful to me, and I'm a big sucker for angst, so naturally, this book ticked off all the right boxes. All of this definitely helped me relate to Addy (and Vincent) on a very personal level (the only one of Sutton's characters that came close before this was Blaire). It is from the point of view of four voices and is set in an English village on the edge of the Peak District. Perhaps the only quibble is that it is maybe TOO short, which somehow makes it seem a slighter endeavor - I wanted more than just a few brief hours in the company of Moss's characters and writing. And it can be a relief realizing that we aren't the only ones who have ever felt this kind of pain. Every time she mentioned Hallow or Bayview I'd get all excited because I feel like I know those places now. By its nature, it's an introspective piece, which flows fairly languidly to its defining moment, then becomes more plot-based for the second half, rolling towards a reflective conclusion.

Again, long-term studies are required to fully understand the risks. The characters are so relatable, my head hurts from smiling so much, it was just so adorable. And in part this may be because the characters in the novel felt like types more than people (and they know it: she's becoming a grumpy old woman, that's what, she's even boring herself, it's going to be avocados she's complaining about next).
