My brothers name is jessica parker. Double ewwwww at the cis author. British author John Boyne who you may know best as the author of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas ponders this question in My Brother's Name is Jessica, a book about Sam, a boy in his early teens, who struggles to find acceptance when his beloved older brother Jason makes the tough decision to tell his family that he is a transgender woman. In many ways, Sam's viewpoint is authentic - his confusion, anger and inability to comprehend his brother's metamorphosis. I find it both interesting and challenging to write about what I don't know and to use my writing to learn about a subject, to understand it and to represent it as authentically as possible in order to help others make sense of it too.

My Brother’s Name Is Jessica – John Boyne – A Discussion –. It makes you sick to your stomach or feels like a punch to the side of the head. Acting like a cis person's confusion over the right names and pronouns and "oh no, I have a sister, what do I do? " This is not good trans representation, and it's not a good book to give to a young adult who might be in a similar situation to the main character.

Very quick read and some interesting thought provoking things spring to mind. With thanks to Nudge Books for providing a sample Audible copy. Boyne's solution is to make Jessica's parents Tory politicians, which seemed an easy opt out – they are little more than caricatures. The Dust Jacket is very fine, unfaded, unclipped ( 12. Her name is jessica. Whilst some elements work, overall I found it heavy handed and lacking in Boyne's trademark humour and nuance. Other books by the same author. The language he uses makes him seem a lot younger, almost as if Boyne doesn't know how older children speak.
As a transgender author who is neck-deep in a community of other trans writers, seeing this book--that makes money off us, centers the cis experience, and does it WRONG all the while--get good ratings, bring in money for a cis writer, and be PUBLISHED by a substantial publisher, all while my trans siblings--writing about their trans experiences respectfully and honestly--struggle to be seen in traditional publishing spaces, is a knife through the heart. His older brother Jason is popular, attractive with a blaze of self-confidence, exuberant where Sam is meek. None of the characters, with the exception of Sam were developed enough and even Sam had the potential to be a little irritating. If you get offended by people having opinions then you're in for a bad life.
Much of the criticism is valid - the story does centre the experiences of Sam, the cisgendered younger brother of Jessica, and her parents rather than the experiences of Jessica herself however it does not validate their pain; instead these characters realise their difficulties are really irrelevant and that it is Jessica's experience that matters. This is where I started getting wary.
