The feeling of unrest and discomfort is well captured but in the end just felt oppressive and whiny in a sense. I recommend picking this up if you want a good story that shows characters who overcome grief to find love and acceptance. And together they were just so incredible cheesy and sweet and I loved it. I still got that teen angst, that occasional cheese of cliche, all that was expected within the genre, but I didn't expect the underlying tones of grief and the self-isolation themes. Incredibly, the author seemed to be implying that his 'selfish' pleasure derived from his volunteer work in some way equates his actions with those of Kate! My favourite character in the book is Alice and I found her chapters the most engaging (despite the drama experienced by Kate). I know I GUSH about Sarah's books every time I review one, so realistically this is no different. Big thanks to the author for my e-ARC of this contemporary YA romance. Ironic though it may seem, I feel like I've found more cogent commentary about our present moment from Moss's historical work. I binge read this in two days and never wanted it to end. Matt is happy to live off cheese toasties and distract himself with computer games, his adventurous mum, however, is struggling at not being able to feel the stiff breeze through her hair and the mud squelching around her hiking boots. People primarily feeling sorry about themselves, or if not overtly that, then minutely describing what causes them inconvenience or self doubt. Alice became my favorite character. This book is the latest by the author of (most recently) "Ghost Wall" in 2018 and "Summerwater" (in 2020). Even saying that is a stretch, however, because a girl struggling with such enormous grief could easily miss those signs. For the first few days after reading it, it was a real struggle not to go back and read it all over again.
