Greenwich Park is an absorbing and intelligent novel which manages to do that very rare thing of having characters who we may dislike, but creates such a connection with them that means we are compelled to follow their stories right to the end. Yet when she smiles, there is something wolfish in it, her canine teeth protruding slightly, small but sharp. There is always an edge of danger and threat when she is around. I am growing less fond of books where the protagonist is a vulnerable woman who makes ill advised decisions (you are befriending Rachel why exactly? ) I liked some parts of this story, but not all. There is a side friendship in the story and that is between Helen and her old childhood friend Katie, now a journalist. Katherine Faulkner's writing is strong in this debut novel that has already earned deserving comparisons to Paula Hawkins's The Girl On The Train, with perhaps even more insight into the psyche of damaged women and what it takes to heal. Then she meets Rachel, another mother-to-be, who smokes and drinks. Curiously, not liking Helen doesn't take anything away from the story since she certainly provokes an emotional response, just not a sympathetic one. Can't wait to read more by this author.
